I juxtapose clips of debunking podcaster Michael Hobbes insisting there's no evidence kids are being rushed onto gender-transition drugs with testimony proving Boston Children's is doing just that.
This is a good example of one kind of coverage I really value on this subject: Introduce a thing people are saying about youth gender medicine that isn't true, then demonstrate WHY it isn't true with primary sources. It's so important to dig into the primary sources instead of what people say about them. Whatever your plans are for these podcasts, I'll be listening as long as you put them out.
I've got an article coming out shortly with a report of a testosterone prescription after 30 minutes with a nurse practitioner. Two hours with a psychologist must be the deluxe service.
I confess I used to be a big fan of "You're Wrong About", until I realized that no "myth" Hobbes dispelled was ever a myth he himself believed in. Everything he disproved went in the same direction as his priors, which seemed weird to me. Michael Hobbes has never discovered any facts that changed *his* mind?
Also, he's a nightmare on Twitter, so much so that I blocked *him*. He doesn't know who I am, but I wanted to be 100% certain I would never see his tweets.
The fact that within WPATH there was controversy about "medical gatekeeping," i.e. about whether gender-dysphoric kids should undergo an extensive psychological evaluation before receiving any "gender-affirming treatments," that was reported by Emily Bazelon in her long June 2022 New York Times Magazine piece.
Also this (note the date of publication):
Azeen Ghorayshi: Doctors Debate Whether Trans Teens Need Therapy Before Hormones. New York Times, Jan 13, 2022
Clinicians are divided over new guidelines that say teens should undergo mental health screenings before receiving hormones or gender surgeries.
That many transgender youth medicine practitioners were not following the Dutch protocol (which requires extensive psychological evaluation) was again reported by Reuters in October 2022.
Laura Edwards-Leeper and Erica Anderson, both psychologists, had rang the alarm bell about kids being rushed into "gender-affirming treatments" in the Washington Post in November 2021.
So Michael Hobbes does not seem to be interested in the truth. And he can't be excused by saying that his podcast was done in summer 2024, before Amy Tishelman testified in court.
That podcast was ridiculous. I had to stop listening on episode 1 the minute Hobbes says that most kids "but not all" show signs of being trans by 4 years old and that basically the adults should move that child along on the path to transition. So disturbing
You are doing important work. Thank you.
Ben bringing the receipts again! Excellent work!

Hey, this is great, thanks.

It’s sad, because he’s actually shown himself on occasion to be a fine reporter. I’m told his podcasting is extremely lucrative, so you do the math.

Agreed.

Well, if you keep listening, you’ll hear a bunch of experts contradict him.
Oh ok. I'll go back then. Thx for mentioning that.
