The mental health profession learned a hard lesson after mistreating gay people during the 20th century, only to repeat those same mistakes—albeit in the name of undoing them—with trans patients.
<<Psychotherapies mostly work towards what is known as integration, helping people to accept all aspects of themselves, whether they are perceived as positive or negative. With gay and lesbian people, we help them embrace their sexual orientation, a part of themselves that often feels shameful and unwanted. By contrast, when working with young people struggling with gender dysphoria, we affirm their feelings that their natal gender is wrong and that leaving it behind or eradicating it is what is best for them. We essentially encourage the opposite of integration: eradication.>>
This is a fantastic way to think of therapy, and a nice metric for measuring good therapy. Really makes you wonder how anyone champions "affirming therapy." I don't *want* my therapist to tell me how right I am; I want her to challenge my assumptions, and to confront the truths I'd rather dodge.
I believe Ritchie Herron, who has done so much to bring attention to all the bad things going on in the adult gender clinics, was told that if he didn't have a vaginoplasty he would lose his psychological support. So exactly like conversion therapy for gays. (And Ritchie is a gay man.)
"Many of the young people I have worked with have described wanting to rid themselves of their natal sex as much as they want to transition to their new gender. "
I take it that the words "sex" and "gender" are not synonymous? If I am a natal male who love Judy Garland and Chanel suits and maybe football, Why can't I have all those things without changing the body an iota?
Great post. The point about transitioning without self-integration is especially well taken. I compare the potential appeal of changing gender identities to relocating to a different state. The move seems like a fresh start. But you’re also moving—and taking your whole self.
This is a shameful and dishonest article by Roberto D'Angelo. He purports to take a nuanced, caring position, but simply repeats all of the nonsense propaganda of the queer theorists. There is no such thing as "transgender" because sex change is impossible. "Gender" is a synonym for "sex." "Natal" sex is redundant. "Gender identity" is an undefined meaningless term.
All people are individuals and should learn to accept themselves as they are. All people have things about themselves they'd like to change. Medical professionals are pretending to have a medical "cure" for the real problem of gender dysphoria. They don't. However, there is much to be learned about the effects of puberty blockers, wrong-sex hormones, so the medical experiment continues.
Conceptually, "gender affirming care" today is no different than lobotomy 80 years ago. If you think they were treating "psychosis," you're wrong. They were experimenting on brain function, and much of what we know now about the brain came directly from this experiment. Similarly, they are experimenting on innocent, confused children right now. The problem is, and always has been, how to get people to volunteer for the experiment. That requires falsely portraying experimental drugs as "safe & effective" and the "standard of care."
I'm in general agreement, but I don't know that this article is purposely dishonest. Lots of people in the mental health business would like to think they have put their trade's oppression of the homosexual in the dustbin of history.
As for the word 'transgender', I believe it retains utility as a description of people who have attempted to change their presentation of sexual characteristics.
I would agree that the mostly obsolete term 'transsexual' could be misleading if people think of it as meaning 'sex change', which as we know is impossible in humans.
The gender ideologues know that there is no such thing as "transgender." Any use of that term without sneer quotes is dishonest. The same goes all of the queer theory buzzwords. Those who seek truth over politeness must understand that the rulers always manipulate minds through the use of language.
Agreed, but I wouldn’t go so far to say gender dysphoria is real when so many of the claims associated with it e.g. “I’ve always felt like I was a girl”, or “I can’t stand to look at my penis” are stock cliches from the trans narrative pervasive in social media for the last 10 years. (Look at all the young women claiming to have DID on TikTok, pretending to jump in and out of multiple personalities). For most trans-identifying men, the ‘born in the wrong body’ narrative is a convenient gloss for a socially unacceptable sexual fetish.
When it comes to mental health, especially with delusions of all kinds, the professionals have to take patients at their word. True, there is no objective test for "gender dysphoria." This condition is self-diagnosed. The DSM did a disservice by renaming "gender identity disorder" to "gender dysphoria." But my point is that simply because there is a problem—real or imagined—does not mean for a minute that big pharma and the doctors have a solution to the problem. The didn't solve mental illness with lobotomy, and they are not solving "gender dysphoria" now.
psychology is not a scientific practice. it never has been and never will be. this is the profession that medicates children just so they can sit still in school. let them fucking run around! this is the profession that claims diagnostic validity for one-to-one assessments of other people's mental states. we run even freaking blood tests in triplicate! this is the profession which tried to convert gay people, which claimed the ability to unlock "repressed memories" in the satanic panic era, and which claimed (and still claims) to be able to determine with diagnostic validity that certain people are "born in the wrong body."
how much more horseshit will people swallow? what will it be next?
I see no evidence that the psychiatric and psychoanalytic professions have pivoted on homosexuality itself. Rather, the target of imposed shame has changed from the sexual act, to the body that the sexual act is performed with.
It turned out that sexuality change attempts were ineffectual and not at all profitable, because therapy is labour-intensive. Whereas multiple gender reassignment procedures per person using capital-intensive surgical centres are a business model: the gift that keeps on giving to a clinic looking to grow.
The complex and invasive surgical procedures required are unlikely to be commoditised or replaced with simpler alternatives. This makes the gender reassignment industry very investable, so long as it remains legal. That's why a lot of effort has been made to lobby politicians and courts to permit and enable radical surgical experiments on a mostly homosexual and entirely sexually deviant cohort.
By contrast, as a labour-intensive process requiring well-paid specialists, psychotherapy is already being automated and commoditised, making it much less investable over the medium to long term.
What must therefore be outlawed is the inexpensive 'artificial intelligence' bot which persuades you, using facts, logic, and your own words, not to attend the gender clinic. I believe that is the ultimate purpose of 'conversion therapy' bans, since the vast majority of trans-sceptical human counsellors have already been neutralised with the use of professional and personal intimidation tactics.
Ask yourself: how many straight people are having their genitals replaced in order to become homosexual, versus the number of homosexuals attempting to become opposite-sex partners via surgical transition? Then factor in the ratio of homosexuals to heterosexuals in the general population, and we can see that this industry is still about 'fixing' the gays and lesbians.
This entire paper (at least what’s available here) glosses over the fact that a large portion of the people seeking “gender transition” *are* homosexual.
Or, in some cases aspire to become 'the opposite sex' in order to validate a homosexual intent that they cannot admit to. The transbian activists never seem to need their genitals removed, do they? Admittedly, I have known an MTF transsexual who after having his penis removed found he was still attracted to women.
This was all forced on us from the top down. We the people had no idea they had built the medical infrastructure to do this sort of thing.
It was bubbling up and brewing while the rest of us was just trying to make life happen.
They made a TV show about it which aired for over a decade and the friggin American people tuned into it for entertainment.
The Jewish mother mutilated the son on nation television and America never blinked an eye. Many cheered it on..
the politicians sat on their hands and could not tell a man from a women.
What kind of religion is this, that thinks god is putting souls in the wrong body? How does this happen?
Now, we get to watch the fall out from all of this as these children age out and figure out how totally innocent they were and their parents and family were to afraid to protect them. They turned their kids over to the government school system and then to the medical community.
This post gets close to the real issue. But it stays too theoretical. Say, for example, a patient presents as believing he was a wolf born in a human body. That person, who believes (perhaps sincerely) that he is a wolf has a mental condition. Psychotherapy should help him accept reality. Or say he believes he is FDR and is still president. And he insists that everyone defer to him and call him Mr. President. He is not FDR, yet “kindness” and the logic by which helping people accept reality is “conversion” therapy, would dictate that we and therapists “affirm” he is FDR.
In a similar vein, “my reality” is BS. Is the moon merely a giant cooking pot that is just above the treetops? Is the earth flat? Some might say these are “my” truths, just as valid as physical reality.
People may prefer behavior that a particular culture says goes with one sex. They may be uncomfortable with their bodies. Do we condone chopping off arms because someone claims they would feel more authentic without their arms. Do we give them drugs that would paralyze them to “align” stated desires with physical reality.
The justifications given for gender affirming care are kind of ghoulish. Chemically castrating kids is good. Physical castration is good. Slicing off healthy breasts is good. FGM is good. Take a step back. Is cutting off someone’s balls a good thing. Is interruption of naturally maturing a good? Step back. This is nonsense. Castration is horrible. FGM is horrible. Dr Mengele was experimenting for the “good” as well.
No, "trans" is 𝘯𝘰𝘵 the new gay. "Affirming care" 𝘪𝘴 the latest attempt at "reparative" or "conversion" therapy. These professionals have at long last been compelled to acknowledge that their electroconvulsive therapy, various sorts of aversion therapy, and all manner of emotional abuse have produced nothing but maimed gay people and not one single happily heterosexual individual. A few of the professionals then realized, "Hey, we can't change these gay kids' orientation; but with some powerful cancer drugs (used off label and with no idea of their long-term side effects)) and some wrong sex hormones (again used off label and with no idea of their long-term side effects) and some brutal surgical mutation, we 𝘤𝘢𝘯 turn them into eunuchs and pitifully poor imitations of their opposite sex. (And no, it's not FGM; that's for ignorant religious or tribalistic reasons, not for highly enlightened, Western 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 reasons.)
Very interesting reading the comments. so far none have clearly have mentioned the concept of our creation by God, our inherent sin nature and the desire of God that we place our faith in Him and what he has revealed to us through His word. Since the Bible describes God as abundant in mercy and patience with us humans, it would seem to most believers that if God intentionally created homosexuality, then by His own attributes He would be bound to be merciful as they are what they are through no fault of their own. of course that is absolutely not the case in scripture. Despite all the posturing , excuses and equivocation the psychology industry has to offer, the fact is that sexual orientation is entirely a matter of nurture, not nature. It has been widely shown that there are a great number of factors in the upbringing of a child that can heavily influence their future sexual orientation choices and the psychology industry is well aware of studies supporting the nurture v nature hypothesis. But as the old saying goes" a patient cured is a customer lost", so we should expect more of the same psychobabble, instead of an effort to trace the problems to the roots. There is can be no doubt that the roots of the Tumbler Ridge massacre (not to mention the Tennessee, Sandy Hook, Columbine etc) are twisted indeed. Prevention starts with honesty and a willingness to face some hard truths. The contempt that Jesus had for those who would lead the little ones astray ought to serve as an indicator of how seriously this has to be addressed.
The are a series of assumption in this article, and within psychology which never seem to be tested.
Taking “trans” at face value, the concept that the sex is “wrong”, how can you tell the difference between a delusion (I am the opposite sex; I have a female penis), a compulsion (I have to imitate the opposite sex), or they are indeed “in the wrong body”.
You can’t.
In fact, the claim that they are the opposite sex is a simple “bizarre” class delusion in psychiatric terms. If the person knows they are their real sex, but admit to a persistent drive to imitate the opposite sex, well what’s a simple compulsion, in psychiatric terms. I’d they cannot recognize their genitalia as their own, that’s a rare sex dysmorphia. If they enjoy imitating the opposite sex for pleasure, that’s a simple fetish. All in psychiatric terms.
There is no “transsexual” condition, only varying behaviors of sexual mimicry (the biological term) like in animals, which is a reaction to fear (imitating the opposite sex to avoid male aggression), to desire or territoriality (bypassing gatekeeping to female enclaves), or to desire (getting off on mimicking women.
There is no “conversion” therapy, not in the sense of aversion therapy for gays and lesbians, but in the sense that halting a compulsion or delusion is not conversion.
The word I look for is “gender”. The term was linked to “identity” by DrX John Money to justify his surgical sexual torture of children, and then by Dr. Robert Stoller to mask the fact that sex mimicry is a compulsion. The only purpose of the word “gender” is to mask the actual sex of the person it refers to.
Do read up on “sex mimicry” in sociobiology or ethology. Anti-Batesian mimicry fully describes the compulsion, delusion, fetish or dysmorphia.
